Bac Sum Pass on the Ha Giang Loop

Though the landscapes only get more dramatic as you progress, Bac Sum Pass offers its own unique set of highlights that make it more than just a mere appetizer for the journey ahead.
Highlights of the Bac Sum Pass
1. Minh Tan Stream
Situated at the base of the Bac Sum Pass, Minh Tan Stream provides a refreshing spot for travelers to take a dip and cool off, especially during the hot days. Though it’s relatively close to the starting point of the loop, it could serve as an ideal location to unwind either at the beginning or the end of your adventure, given it’s only a 45-minute drive back to Ha Giang City.
2. Bac Sum Pass Viewpoint
As you ascend along the well-maintained road, you’ll be treated to numerous eye-catching vistas. Near the summit, there’s a restaurant featuring an excellent viewpoint where you can pause for a drink and absorb the breathtaking scenery. Alternatively, there are plenty of spots along the route where you can safely pull over to capture some memorable photographs.
3. Tham Luong Cave
For cave enthusiasts, a slight detour to Tham Luong Cave could be rewarding. Though not particularly extraordinary, the cave does require a bit of stair-climbing and offers a glimpse into a charming, rural setting. If you’re tackling the loop in 3 or 4 days, it might be best to skip this attraction. However, those on a 5-day itinerary could find it worth the minor detour.
4. Hoa Tam Buckwheat Flower Fields
Immediately after crossing Bac Sum Pass, you’ll arrive at Hoa Tam, known for its stunning Buckwheat Flower Fields. The ideal time to witness this spectacle is from late September to December. The blossoming fields present a perfect backdrop for photography and a unique botanical experience.
5. Heaven’s Gate and Twin Mountain

How to Get to Bac Sum Pass

The Bac Sum Pass is situated in the Vi Xuyen District, a part of Ha Giang Province, and is easily accessible as it lies directly along the Ha Giang Loop. Your transportation options include self-driving a motorbike, riding pillion on a motorbike, or opting for a car journey.
From Hanoi to Ha Giang
To kick off your adventure, you’ll first need to travel from Hanoi to Ha Giang. This journey takes about 6 to 7 hours and can be accomplished either by sleeper buses during the night or by limousine buses and cars during the day.
From Ha Giang to Bac Sum Pass
Once in Ha Giang, follow the primary highway QL4C, which forms part of the loop, leading you directly over the Bac Sum Pass. It’s roughly a one-hour drive from Ha Giang City.
